What are Space Brownies?

Space brownies are called space brownies because they are supposed to give you an out-of-this-world experience. When taken in the right amount, they’re going to send you to space and make you see stars.

If you can’t guess what the magic ingredient is, you probably should go out more. Space brownies are basically brownies infused with cannabis.

Cannabis edibles are not a new fad — they have been around for quite some time. The earliest recorded cannabis-infused food was in 1,000 BCE in the Indian subcontinent, where people have been taking it for both spiritual and medicinal purposes. Today, they are legal in many countries.

Are Space Brownies Safe?

For many centuries, cannabis has been known to be beneficial in treating various medical conditions, including chronic pain, cancer-related symptoms, muscle spasms, depression, and anxiety.

Among the active compounds in cannabis, the main two are:

  • THC, which is responsible for inducing feelings of euphoria and relaxation, and

  • CBD, which has been shown to have pain, inflammation, and anxiety-reducing properties.

Smoking vs Edibles

Although smoking cannabis is rarely considered harmful, there have been several inconclusive studies that associate marijuana smoke with lung inflammation, bronchitis, impaired brain functions, and cancer.

In contrast, edible cannabis products have not been shown to negatively affect lung health or increase cancer risk. It is therefore considered safer to consume cannabis in its edible form than to smoke it. However, this is not to say that edible cannabis is entirely free from possible adverse effects.

Unlike smoking cannabis, which takes only a few minutes to take effect, cannabis edibles take much longer — sometimes up to 90 minutes. The effects also vary from one person to another, depending on one’s body weight, gender, metabolism, and a host of other factors.

What this means is that it is very easy to unintentionally overconsume cannabis edibles, since you are unable to gauge immediately whether you have taken too much. This may then result in undesirable symptoms.

On top of that, the fact that most edible cannabis products resemble regular food — such as gummy candies, cookies, and other baked goods — poses a risk of accidental ingestion, especially by children and pets.

Possible Side Effects of Space Brownies

  • Anxiety

  • Dry mouth

  • Fatigue

  • Impaired motor ability

  • Changes in visual perception

  • Psychosis (paranoia, extreme sedation, hallucinations, and confusion)

What Should I Know Before Eating a Space Cake?

The term “space cake” doesn’t correspond to a specific dosage or potency, so past positive experiences should never be used as a guiding metric for future consumption. In other words: just because you had an enjoyable, mellow time when you last dined on space cake, that doesn’t mean the same thing will happen the time you have some.

For this reason, many folks prefer to make their baked goods at home to ensure consistency. While labeling — when accurate — can tell us the amount of THC and CBD in a given space cake, it can not guarantee the even distribution of cannabinoids, nor the quality of the strain utilized. States like California now have laws that require testing to ensure each bite of an edible has an equal amount of THC, but nothing beats your own two hands when it comes to having full knowledge of your edibles.

In terms of the actual experience, the majority of the cannabis one ingests as an edible is converted from Delta-9-THC to 11-hydroxy-THC. The latter is notably potent, which partially explains why many equate the high from edibles as being stronger than the one achieved by smoking or vaporization. This process also explains why edible highs often take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to take hold, as well as why they last for far longer than smoking highs.

How to Enjoy Edibles Safely

Many people enjoy using cannabis products to relax and ease stress, while some take edibles to treat or improve symptoms of a medical condition.

Either way, it’s important to use safe products and choose appropriate dosages to avoid unwanted side effects.

If you’re interested in using edibles to treat a medical condition, talk with your doctor to learn if medical marijuana is an option.

Depending on where you live, you might be able to get a physician’s “recommendation.” In the United States, 36 states allow the use of medical marijuana. It has also been legalized in countries around the world, including Canada and many European countries.

Some conditions that may warrant a medical marijuana physician’s recommendation include:

  • chronic pain

  • anxiety

  • multiple sclerosis

  • terminal illness

  • inflammatory bowel disease

In contrast, recreational use of cannabis is illegal in many parts of the world, including many parts of the United States. As of 2021, 16 states, two territories, and the District of Columbia currently allow for the use of recreational cannabis products.

However, even though cannabis is legal to use in many U.S. states, it remains illegal at a federal level and is considered a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), alongside drugs like heroin.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Schedule I substances are “determined to have a high potential for abuse” and are defined as having “no currently accepted medical use”.

Yet, many disagree with this classification, especially those who have seen firsthand that cannabis products offer medicinal and therapeutic benefits for many people.

In fact, scientists have repeatedly questioned this classification which prevents research on real-world cannabis and only allows U.S. scientists to study cannabis that the federal government grows in Mississippi. Some argue that the current legal status is outdated and “thwarts legitimate research” exploring the potential of cannabis use in the medical field.

Though both social and political views on cannabis are changing rapidly, for now, citizens must abide by the laws set forth by state and federal governments for the use of both medical and recreational cannabis.

Purchasing Safe Cannabis Products

When using edible cannabis for the first time — whether for medical or recreational reasons — it’s important to do so safely.

Sticking to prescribed dosage and usage recommendations can help reduce your risk for potential negative effects related to overconsumption.

If purchasing edible cannabis products in a state where recreational use is legal, only purchase products from a licensed dispensary that you trust.

Licensed dispensaries are often required to have their products tested for safety and potency in state-accredited laboratories to be approved for sale.

However, testing protocols vary considerably from state to state, and some don’t require laboratory testing.

It’s important to note that cannabis bought from illegal operations or dispensaries that sell untested products can be contaminated with pesticides, mold, fungi, bacteria, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and other substances that can pose serious health risks.

Dispensaries & online stores typically carry a variety of cannabis products with different concentrations of THC and CBD, which can be confusing for first-time buyers.

Make Your Own

Cannabutter: If you don't already have this made, start with our guide to making cannabutter in a crockpot or cannabutter in an Instant Pot. Then, the cannabutter needs to be softened to room temperature for the best result. It won't cream together well if it is cold and hard. Completely melted is not ideal either. You can substitute cannabis coconut oil here, but it should be room temperature, too. If you would like to infuse butter with cannabis oil, this can be done by heating both the butter and oil to homogenize the product and then let cool and form to room temp.

Sugar: We use both white and brown sugar in this recipe, but if you want, you could substitute both or either for cannabis sugar.

Optional toppings: These brownies are your blank canvas. Feel free to add nuts, chocolate chips, caramel, or sea salt.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ cup cannabutter (or cannabis coconut oil) room temperature

  • 1 cup white sugar (or cannabis sugar)

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon optional toppings nuts, chocolate chips, sea salt

Step 1 - Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a baking pan and set it aside.

Step 2 - In a medium bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Set aside.

Step 3 - In another medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugars.

Step 4 - Add the eggs and vanilla to the creamed sugar.

Step 5 - Beat at medium speed for one minute.

Step 6 - Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients.

Step 7 - Beat on low speed until everything is well incorporated.

Step 8 - Pour into the baking pan.

Step 9 - If you are adding any additional toppings, add them now.

Step 10 - Bake in the oven for 25-35 minutes, depending on your consistency preferences.

Step 11 - If you can wait, allow the brownies to cool for 30 minutes before cutting into squares.

Step 12 - Enjoy and repeat!
